What exactly is The Npili School Project?
The Npili School Project is taking place in Ensalma Village, 24 kilometers from the capital Bissau. Currently the village has one active school with only three somewhat maintained classrooms. These harsh circumstances are further proven by the fact that 1,000 students attending this school must walk at least 20 minutes and face various risks just to attend class.
The Npili Project is currently aiming to build an all-girls school along with boarding facilities that offer education from pre-school to secondary school. Not only are they building a safe place for young women to develop an education, but they are creating multiple facilities which include a cafeteria, teachers facility, pediatric reception, playground and many more projects that will prove to be beneficial for their community.
You can get a clearer picture of the life of a young girls life in Ensalma Village in this animated video:
Why is an all-girls school needed?
Everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue an education. Unfortunately, in this village, education is prioritized for boys, while girls usually stay at home to help their mothers with chores. This leads to worrying statistics which include:
- A large portion of young women ages 6–10 do not attend school
- There is a high dropout percentage of 44%
- This leads to around 37% of young women getting married before the age of 18
These alarming figures bring to light how critical it is to empower girls with access to quality education from a young age. The Npili School Project is a huge stepping stone to an end goal of gender equality everywhere.
What are the details of this building process?
The Npili Project is in the process of making massive changes to the environment of Ensalma Village in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. They are doing this in a multitude of ways which include:
- Incorporation of sustainable construction techniques
- Solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and composting latrines into their design
- Reserving an area in order to create a garden that provides a self-sufficient food source
